"If this isn’t a quantum leap for someone his age I don’t know what is" - Speedway promoter Willie Kay on Ben’s move from Mini Stocks to Sprint Cars.

Ben Finemore first got behind the wheel in mini stocks at the age of twelve. His excellent driving record at mini stocks earned him a special dispensation to race Sprint Cars aged fifteen, an honour normally reserved for drivers sixteen years and over. Supporters, like Willie Kay, thought the move to Sprint Cars was monumental. Ben Finemore took it in his stride. He became New Zealand Sprint Car Champion later that same season, before qualifying for a full Sprint Car licence and while still having a restricted licence for open road driving.
